Is playing Mah Jong against the law in China?

no, but if you gamble, it's another thing.|||if you play with yourself in public then yes it is illegal|||Not that I know. I was living in Chengdu and there old people used to play Mah Jong all day outside with friends.|||no, don't lose too much tha't ok|||Actually, it is a grey area. The game itself is perfectly legal as long as it doesn't involve money. But you know, a game would be just boring without ANY wager wouldn't it? So the authorities usually turn a blind eye except under the following conditions or when a neighbor files a complaint.

There are large groups of players and many tables.

The wagers are high, say in the thousands of dollars.

There is a game everyday at the same location.

It's kinda like the guys playing poker on friday nights, it's not likely that the police will come crashing down the doors unless things get out of hand.
